Thank you for your interest in How You Can Help and volunteering with The Nevada Youth Empowerment Project. We community members who support our mission to volunteer with us. If you support our mission and would like to get involved as a volunteer, we encourage you to review our volunteer opportunities below, and submit a completed volunteer application. Your information will be kept confidential and will be used to help us find the most satisfying and appropriate volunteer opportunity within our organization for you.

  • Volunteers must complete a Volunteer Application.
  • Volunteers must tour NYEP and meet staff.
  • Unsupervised volunteers must complete a background check.
  • Volunteers must make a time commitment – to be determined upon your start of service.
  • Volunteers must agree to participate in volunteer training.

Volunteering is an integral part of NYEP’s housing program. To NYEP volunteering is not just a hobby, it is a way of life. We are a community based program that feels that not only our residents but every individual should play a meaningful part in our communities growth.

We are thankful for our passionate, talented, and dedicated group of volunteers that has helped us grow.

  • Alexa Anderson is a UNR student that donates her time to NYEP by providing our residents the gift of health by teaching them nutrition basics.
  • Cathy Bryant is a member of our fundraising committee that donates her time and creativity to NYEP planning and coordinating fundraising events for NYEP.
  • Jillian Crowl is a member of our fundraising committee that donates her time to NYEP by providing resources and planning for NYEP’s fundraising events.
  • Rick Pugh is an Americorps VISTA member providing his first year of service to NYEP.
  • Dana Shoenhard donates her time to NYEP by teaching our residents new skills, assisting with administrative tasks and helping on our fundraising committee.
  • Cindy Ringer is an Americorps VISTA member that is providing her third year of service to NYEP.
  • John Wagoner donates his time to NYEP by assisting with our website and online  platforms.
  • Vernon “Tiger” White keeps our residents in shape by teaching Mixed Martial Arts once a week.

Volunteer Opportunities

On-Site Education Support: Provide tutoring, study help, and assistance with projects to high school and college age students in a variety of subjects from high school math to college English. Many of our residents are also in need of tutoring to pass high school proficiency exams, the GED test, or even the Nevada written driving test.  Teach Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more. Must be willing to visit the NYEP facility at scheduled times to work with residents.

Independent Living Coach: Provide staff with assistance while providing learning assistance to youth regarding independent living skills. You can focus on a variety of skills, including financial management, employment skills, educational support and household maintenace. Must be willing to visit the NYEP facility at scheduled times to work with residents.

Cooking Coach: Share your skills in planning a menu, grocery shopping, budgeting and preparing meals with youth living in the Community Living Program. You could prepare a dinner for a group or work with an individual youth to shop, plan and prepare a meal. Must be willing to visit the NYEP facility at scheduled times to work with residents.

Special Events Specialist: Work with the NYEP staff to build a sense of community by assisting to facilitate and recreational activities and celebrations for youth living in the Community Living Program. Favorite activities include birthday celebrations, game night or arts groups. Must be willing to visit the NYEP facility at scheduled times to work with residents.

Wellness Coach: Teach and support youth in building healthy lifestyles through nutrition and execise. Develop programming and potential fitness space. Youth have requested support in making healthy choices and learning new skills. Wellness strategies also include stress management. Available hours: evenings and weekends.

Social Media Specialist: Help identify, set up and maintain online tools to market NYEP to potential supporters.

Civic Engagement Specialist: Help identify local organizations in need of group and individual volunteers. Make contact with volunteer supervisors and determine if organizations are a good fit for our residents. Assist with matching volunteers, scheduling, and obtaining performance feedback.

Administrative Support: Provide basic office assistance to the NYEP staff. Prepare information packets; enter data; make copies; file. Available hours: days
